Dr. Erin L. Gawron-Hyla

Microelectronics Commons CTEA Lead for Workforce Development DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, supporting OUSD (R&E)

Dr. Gawron-Hyla began her government career as a Research Chemist in the Electromagnetic Spectrum Sciences Division, Electromagnetic Effects Branch of DEVCOM ARL. Her background as a materials chemist led to supporting research efforts in device protection and secure packaging as part of the Protective Technologies Team.

While at DEVCOM ARL, Erin also served as a mentor for teachers participating in the Army Research Experiences for STEM Educators and Teachers (RESET) program and currently serves as a U.S. Government affiliate to the NSF-funded UC San Diego Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC).

In December 2023, Dr. Gawron-Hyla began serving as the Microelectronics Commons Technical Execution Area Lead for Workforce Development supporting the Office of Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD (R&E)). Her role includes oversight of Hub workforce development portfolios by monitoring plans and metrics, as well as coordination of microelectronics workforce development efforts that may result in synergistic cost-share opportunities between the Commons and other government agencies.

Dr. Gawron-Hyla received her B.S. in Chemistry and Mathematics from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology as part of the first class of women, and her M.S. in Science Education from Purdue University. She then taught high school chemistry for a decade and served as science department chair at Heritage High School in Conyers, GA. She also holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Georgia Tech and completed a Post Doctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.
